Former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni, known for her iconic performances in films like Karan Arjun and Baazi, has renounced worldly life and embraced spirituality. She officially took sanyas (renunciation) during the Mahakumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj and has been honored with the title of Mahamandaleshwar of the Kinnar Akhara, a monastic order associated with the Juna Akhara.
New Name and Initiation Rituals
On January 24, 2025, Mamta Kulkarni was given the spiritual name Shri Yamai Mamta Nand Giri as part of her initiation. To symbolize her complete detachment from her past life, she performed Pind Daan at the sacred Sangam Ghat, a Hindu ritual usually conducted for deceased ancestors.
Dressed in traditional saffron robes and adorned with a Rudraksha mala, she now fully dedicates herself to a life of devotion and meditation.
A Journey Guided by Divine Calling
Kulkarni has reportedly been in touch with the Kinnar Akhara for over a year and a half, expressing her deep interest in spiritual life. Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, a prominent figure in the Akhara, affirmed that they welcome individuals from all walks of life to embrace Sanatan Dharma.
Speaking about her transformation, Mamta Kulkarni said:
“This was the order of Mahadev and Maha Kaali. This was the order of my Guru. They chose this day—I didn’t do anything.”
